Letter No. 7 · Letters to Mariners

To the Mariners,
Fellow mariners,
Picture the middle watch. The bridge is quiet. Coffee in the mug. Ahead of the bow, the sea is a dark road with no mile markers. Someone steps out on the wing for air, lifts a phone, and takes one frame — the rail, a patch of weather, the sky just starting to change. That photograph is not a brochure. It is what it looks like to live out here.
We are opening a call for those photographs.
One concrete project. Hitch, our Seafaring Intelligence at North 37, already keeps a home for the questions mariners ask, the tracks of work at sea, and the assessments that were properly assessed. We want that same home to hold a living photo and image archive — pictures and useful images from life at sea, contributed by the people who sail. From that collection we will do three things next: generate a film from the archive so the wider world can see the work; classify the metadata so each image carries honest context; and map it geographically so the gallery has a chart as well as a reel. This is one project someone in this community could take on, contribute to, or help shape. The goal is simple: a real visual look at what it is like to live at sea.
Seafaring Intelligence is being built across many tools and voices so the language comes from many sources.
What to shoot. Ordinary life, not staged ads. The watch. Weather on the deck. The mess. Lines and paint. Sunrise on the rail. Training and drills done right. The quiet between ports. A face of a shipmate who wants to be in the picture. If it is true to the work, it belongs.
What not to send. Be honest and safe. Do not send restricted security imagery, cargo documents, company-proprietary material, or anything your company forbids. Adult mariners know the difference. If you would not put it in a public log, do not put it in this archive.
How we will use it — credit and consent. By contributing, you allow North 37 Maritime Academy to use your images for the archive, for the educational film built from the collection, and for a mapped gallery. We will credit you when you want credit. You can request anonymization. Say so when you send.
How to send. Details for how to upload or deliver photos will be at north37.academy — under Letters / contact — as we open this call. Hold your best frames ready; watch the academy site or reply through the channel you already use with us for upload instructions. [upload link / email TBD]
North 37 is actively becoming Coast Guard–approved, in process through National Maritime Center pathways. We are heading toward our own nonprofit home for this work. We would rather earn trust by asking plainly — for photos, for judgment, for help building something useful — than by claiming more than we have.
If you have a hard drive of sea years sitting in a drawer, if you shoot every hitch, if you are the person who could help build the film or the map once the archive fills — write back. Bring your pictures. Keep your standards. Show the world the water the way we actually live on it.
Fair winds,
Wayne
